PONIATOWA
(COMMUNAL CEMETERY)
Monument to the memory of the heroes of the January Uprising
The five inhabitants of the local lands and thousands of others were resistant to the Russian partition in January 1863. The youngest insurgents, coming from the area of today's Poniatowa Commune, were then only 17 years old. One of them was Feliks Pisarski, who took part in the Battle of Fajsławice on August 24, 1863. Also 17 years old was Ignacy, of the Junosza coat of arms, Daćbóg Drewnowski, an inhabitant of Niezabitów, who joined the uprising as a private and then fought under the command of Świdziński, Lelewel and Jeziorański. Henryk Wojciech Jakub Wiercieński also came from Niezabitów. He became an insurgent at the age of 20 and later took an active part in the clashes in Wąchock, at the Holy Cross and in Staszów. He served under the command of Colonel Dionizy Czachowski. After less than a month of fighting, on February 25, 1863 - after the battle of Małogoszcz - he became a prisoner. Two other residents of Poniatowa municipality who took part in the January rally were peasant Wojciech Zaremba and burgher Sebastian Śledziński.
On November 11, 2013, a monument was unveiled, consisting of a field boulder and a commemorative table dedicated to people from the areas currently belonging to the Poniatowa Commune, who took part in the January Uprising (1863–1864). It was a project which summarized the activities of the Friends of Poniatowa Association in connection with the jubilee celebrations of the one hundred and fifty years of this national break.
