LEŚNICZÓWKA

Mass grave of World War I soldiers who died in 1914–1915

The front line of the First World War ran in the area between Kowala, today's Poniatowa, Leśniczówka and Trzebiesza. During battles in 1914 and 1915 died people of different nationalities. After the end of the armed forces, in the place where the soldiers fighting against each other, were buried, the local people raised the cross on the grave as an expression of respect for the victims. Such graves often hid the bodies of nameless fallen, many of whom were Poles fighting in Austro-Hungarian, Russian and German uniforms, who died without having an independent homeland.

In autumn 2004, thanks to the efforts of Mr Stefan Posyniak, a commemorative obelisk was erected here. On May 8, 2005, during the ceremony of blessing fields, a new cross was set up in place of the one destroyed. All of this happened thanks to the support of the Poniatowa Commune authorities. The participants, including local authorities, commune councillors, scouts, young people from the Catholic Youth Association and the numerous community of the Leśniczówka, once again paid tribute to the tragically deceased.
