KRACZEWICE

Insurgent grave dedicated to the heroes killed in 1831 in the struggle for independence

In Kraczewice Prywatne, about 30 meters from the Poniatowa-Szczuczki district road, there is an insurgent grave from 1831. It is probably the only burial place in the district of insurgents killed during the fights with the Russians in April 1831. The losses of the Polish army in this area amounted to nearly 200 men. It is likely that several dozen uhlans of General Julian Sierawski, killed in the Battle of Wronów, which took place on April 17, 1831, lie there.

On the quartermaster's map of 1839, the grave is marked with a cross. It is not known exactly when the mound was raised on the grave. This may have been done in the early 1830s, as repression after the January Uprising was not as severe as after 1863. It is possible that it was happened around 1861, during the period of patriotic manifestations before the outbreak of the January Uprising. After World War I, a cross was placed on the grave, and in 1924 it was described as "a mound with a cross on the grave of insurgents". In 1935 it was extensively renovated and a tombstone was placed. A further restoration took place in 1974, as evidenced by the inscription on the new plaque.

The monument was restored thanks to the initiative of the inhabitants in 2018. The location of the grave on private land prevented the commune from carrying out its renovation with public funds, therefore the Social Committee for the renovation of the monument was established, composed of Andrzej Chyła, Marek Frąckiewicz, and Justyna Kwiatkowska, which organized a collection for its renovation. Thanks to this initiative, the original tombstone from 1935 were uncovered and secured.

On August 6, 2018, in Kraczewice Prywatne, the unveiling and consecration of the restored monument took place, which was combined with the Day of Struggle and Martyrdom of the Polish Village, celebrated for the first time in Poland.
